Schofields Korean Plaza: A Sister Cities Story
This project aims to commemorate the sister cities relationship between Blacktown city council and SuSeong cIty council. Blacktown is located near Sydney, Australia while SuSeong is located within Daegu city, South Korea.
As an industrial designer, my purpose in the team is to design innovative street furniture that would link the two cities closer. My main brief consist of elements that the citizens of Blacktown can enjoy the taste of Korea. There is 2 product proposals into the space that revolves largely around Samtaegeuk and Trigrams as seen on south korean flags.
Samtaegeuk
Samtaegeuk is a popular variant of Taegeuk where it is related to the buddhist symbol of Gankyil. Samtaegeuk has 3 colours that represent humanity, earth and heaven. This factors are represented in my design for the street lighting pole.
Suited For Different Parts
The different variants of the same design are used in different parts of the plaza. For example, the 02 variant are used in areas which the road and plaza intersect.
The design of the three different variants does seem like a group of streamlined street furniture that could bring in some South Korean elements to the design.
Started Off With Korean Taegeuk
The design started of with the korean identity and that led to the taegeuk. It strikes off to me as a design that is very holy and very interconnected in all ways. Therefore, the idea of having 3 circles working off a middle pole (that interconnects from there) is a great way to direct the project.
Scale & Direction
The scale of the 3 variants are shown in mm.
3D Model
This is a zoom up 3D model where you can play around and have fun.
Trigrams
Trigrams in the south korean flags are actually a variant from the taoist cosmology symbol of Bagua. The symbols making up of dashes and lines meaning different natures. South korea national flag uses 4 of the elements that mean justice, life, wisdom and fertility.
This design of Trigram is a supporting element of the open air stage. Taking into account that the stage is the most important part of the plaza (Yin-Yang), these trigrams street furniture act as an enclosure area and lighting for the surrounding atmosphere.
Elements Trigrams
To portray the lines and spaces, two different types of material has been implemented. While the lines/ dashes are represented by the black anodised aluminium, the spaces are represented by the blue tinted glass and would light up at night.
Scale & Direction
The scale in this design is measured in CM.
